REVIEW - MISTLETOE & MISHIGAS - Sparkly Wonder

Mistletoe And Mishigas by MA Wardell

Date read: 30th November 2023

My rating: 4.5*
Genre I reckon: m/m Festive Romance

Buy link: Amazon

First off; I haven't read Teacher of the Year yet :-O But this totally reads as a stand-alone. And I was after festive reads.

Sheldon is a femme, super gay. I appreciate this won't be to everyone's taste, but hey, I LOVED him. After being rejected so badly, he's even 'more' to compensate. And how marvellous that he was free to do that in this book.

The relationship between him and his twin sister is everything! And shows his vulnerability behind closed doors. Oh, and Janice the cat is adorable.

Now, we get to the 'grump' part. Theo, bless him. He is a veteran with PTSD - an injured warrior. He has cut himself off from the world as he tries to come to terms with what's happened. This makes him appear grumpy and stand-offish. But that won't stop the unicorn-fart that is Sheldon from trying to bring sparkly sunshine into his life.

Theo Berenson seems to be Iorek Byrnison in human form!

btw mishigas means 'craziness'.

Fake dating is not usually my thing. But in this book it really worked. Both guys have issues, and together they can tackle them. (*whispers*) They're both really sweet too. And there's a height difference.

The mix of Hanukah and Christmas was lovely - a blend of festive cheer that was heart-warming

The steam was pretty good too ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed this festive fake dating tale.

So, if you want a different type of holiday romance, you should definitely give this one a go.

A 4.5* shiny stars from me.

REVIEW - The Crown - Glory Be

The Crown by Nancy Bilyeau

Date read: 3rd November 2023

My rating: 4.5*
Genre I reckon: Historical fiction (which has murder mystery and a hint of romance)

Buy link: Amazon

I actually discovered this book whilst researching my own novel, and I'm so glad I did.

The author has carefully weaved threads of real history into this fictional world, as marvellous as one of the tapestries made in the story.

Joanna Stafford (of the infamous Stafford family), is a novice nun at Dartford Priory.

Her strong ties to family vie with her staunch religious beliefs in this tale of woe and mystery.

There is a burning at the stake, imprisonment in The Tower of London, secret passageways, murder and sleuthing, Tudor style.

This was clearly very well-researched. And the characters are all intriguing. Brother Richard and Geoffrey Scoville are two of my favourites.

I felt immersed in Tudor life throughout.

A fab historical fiction (which has murder mystery and a hint of romance).

4.5*

REVIEW - THE MONK'S TALE - Dastardly Deeds

The Monk's Tale by April Munday

Date read: 4th October 2023

My rating: 4.5*
Genre I reckon: Medieval Adventure Romance

Buy link: Amazon

This is actually the first book I've read by this author, but it is the 2nd in a series.

Although I was maybe hoping to see more of the monastic life, given the circumstances, I'm sort of glad I didn't.

This book contains triggers for: violence, abuse, kidnapping and killing. It's set in violent times, after all.

It is action packed - danger is all around the two main characters. Former novice, Mark, is sought out by Tilda who is in desperate need of protection. Much jostling for position ensues!

The characters all have depth; I appropriately loathed the bad guys and was enchanted by the good ones. And there were some wonderful touches which really drew you into the 14th century.

A well-researched, medieval adventure!

A solid 4.5* from me.

REVIEW - GOBBELINO LONDON - CATegorically magnificent!

Gobbelino London (series) by Kim M Watt

Date read: 12th August 2023

My rating: 5*
Genre I reckon: Kitty PI

Buy link: Amazon

This series is AMAZING - no baby goats! I'm actually sad it's over (probably). There is wriggle room should the author find it impossible to stay away from the mayhem.

I love the creative names of each books as well as the creative insults (often involving cabbages or other veg!).
More than that, I adore Callum and Gobbelino. They are awkward misfits in the human and folk worlds. They amble along, getting dragged through one potentially world-ending disaster to another. But they're not alone - a marvellous cast of characters support (or act against) them at every turn.

Old people, trolls, rats, weres etc. - beings often shunned befriend our MCs.

The tales are all gloriously told through the eyes of Gobbelino, the small black cat with a big attitude. And let us not forget Green Snake, who makes himself sort of understood and very useful.

Fun, magickal chaos sums up this magnificent series!

You just have to read it to believe it.

(I really hope there are more books in the future - I could read these two cuties forever!)

REVIEW - GENTLEMEN PREFER VILLAINS - such sweet psychos!

Gentlemen Prefer Villains by C Rochelle

Date read: 21st July 2023

My rating: 5*
Genre I reckon: m/m supervillain romance

Buy link: Amazon

"Such sweet pyschos" is not exactly something I ever thought I'd mutter, yet the phrase played on repeat in my head as I read this marvellous tome!

"My perfect tiny tyrant," or, "My murderous cream puff,"  and even, "My precious murder baby," are just some of the terms of endearment you can expect. And they tell you everything you need to know, really.

In the first book, Wolfgang (Wolfy), showed a glimpse of his caring nature. And I was so happy to see him get his own book. Yes, the sweetness gets the spotlight. But don't misunderstand, he's still a lean, mean, killing machine. This boy is about as bad as they come!

And yet, he's no match for the feisty brat who walks into his office.

The banter/with flies like a caped crusader. The action is hotter than Captain Volcano. The excitement is off the charts. LOVED this!

I was worried that book 2 in the series couldn't possibly live up to my expectations from the marvels of book 1. But wow, this actually exceeded them!

Favourite quote: "Nothing like a little hand to gland combat to inspire a battle cry."

Next book, please!!

PONDERING - The Realities of Being an Author (10 years in)

This is NOT a brag post, far from it. However, writing is easy for me. I love it. Stories come to me in that place between sleep and awake, and when the words flow out of me into my manuscript, it’s a special kind of magick. That's not to say I don't have my moments, though - those times where Self-Doubt creeps in or a character does something stupid.

However, the rest is HARD!

There is always research, especially for my historical novels. Love in the Roses (my medieval book) took me two YEARS to create. But that’s its own kind of fun, even if one does end up in rabbit holes of The Internet discovering one exciting thing after another.

The hard part is what comes after. The editing; hacking away bits you love yet don’t drive the story.

The publishing – so many decisions to make from cover design to blurb writing and the myriad of options one must sift through; pricing, size, paper, platform/s etc. And the countless uploads into your chosen platform, ensuring the book displays as you intended.

Then there’s the marketing. That’s where the real work begins. Creating beautiful images and videos, deciding which quotes are enticing. And adapting according to which social media outlet you use; each has their own style expectation. And then one must do battle with the algorithms, trying against all odds to get a wide audience to see the wonders you’ve spent hours creating. It can feel like you’re screaming into the void.

But increasingly, there is The Fear.

Not only is it incredibly nerve-wracking to push the big, scary publish button (which in itself is terrifying). I mean, what if readers hate your precious book baby? This is perhaps the biggest hurdle and why so many potential writers don't meet their full potential.

But no, that's not fear enough on its own, says The Universe. We now live in an age of Cancel Culture – you so much as breathe in the wrong way and someone will decide to be offended and cry for your cancellation. And that’s before you even encounter trolls who just target you because they can and they’re bored. Or, dare I say, those who tear other authors down as they fear competition. Seriously, there are millions of readers out there – we can and should share.

The latter saddens me the most. Authors are often the only ones who know our lived experience, who understand this crazy journey. We should only be supportive of one another. Heaven knows I try to.

Then there is the endless sea of scammers. I block accounts daily. There are those who promise to garner thousands of followers if you just pay $xx (which they won’t). Or tell you they want to read your book, but ask for payment. And, of course, many authors get sent dick pics. Or end up on lists so you get tagged in those annoying posts pretending you’ve won something. Or folk who say they want you to be a brand ambassador. The list goes on.

Pirates sail those seas too. And if you’re unfortunate enough for someone to steal your book, and put it on an illegal site, if you’re in Kindle Unlimited and Amazon bots detect your book “on sale” elsewhere they’ll cancel your whole account, even though you’re utterly innocent. And you try arguing against The Mighty Zon!!

There was even a raft of writers a few months ago who Amazon accused of being connected to a banned account – authors who had only had one selling account for years. Their accounts got closed with no initial explanation. Their protestations were met with unsympathetic representatives who insisted they were guilty. It took the assistance of big name influencers and many many emails to get their accounts reinstated.

Then there are hackers. I personally, lost my original author fb account which had a fan page and support groups attached to it. After 8 years, I had 6,000 followers. Lost! And no way to get it back.

Authors are NOT rich! Most of us have day jobs in order to pay the bills and keep a roof over our heads. On average, we receive £1 per book. And that’s not profit. Out of that, we have to pay for editors, cover designers, merchandising and advertising etc. etc. etc.

Like all creatives, we do not write for profit. There are far easier ways to make money, believe me.

I write because I love it! But all the stress caused by The Fear created from the above is making it increasingly hard to hold onto that love. There are only so many times you can hit your head against a brick wall before giving yourself concussion.

Look, this all sounds like I hate my author life. I really don’t. I’m just exhausted! The countless hours of creating videos/images along with all the writing bits mounts up. And I’ve been working a lot of temp jobs this year in order to fund my book launches and pay for the increasing cost of living that we’re all experiencing.

I was really ill repeatedly at the tail end of last year. To the extent that I went to my dark place, not being able to foresee a time I would ever feel healthy again. Yes, I'm saying I considered taking my own life - just being honest here. And even although I’ve recovered, my energy still gets easily sapped. And I know I’m not alone in this.

That Which Shan’t Be Named had a massive impact on us all (spot the obvious statement of the year!). But it did. Has. We’re still feeling the aftermath of that horrific time. We were all put into flight or fight mode for a prolonged period, even if we did not get the lurgy itself. And that alone is exhausting.

But trying to be creative under such duress was nigh impossible. And for people like we authors, that’s incredibly frustrating. We feel like we’re failing, and panic that we’ll never write again. That we’ve lost that magick spark which lights us up. *NEWS FLASH* we haven’t lost it.

We’re at midsummer right now as I write this. We’re supposed to be at the zenith of power for the year. However, in the UK, we have oppressive heat. Our hot weather comes with incredibly high humidity and we live in homes designed to trap heat in as we used to be a cold country. Most of us don’t have air conditioning. And we feel like we’re being baked like potatoes! This can make us grumpy, miserable, aggressive, frustrated, unwell, fatigued – any/all of these. It does not help us find our happy thought!

After ten years of being a writer, I’ve learned a lot. I wrote down all the things I wish I’d known at the start of my author life in order to pave the way for others; to make it a little easier for them. How To Write A Historical Novel And Love It is its title. There is even a checklist to work through for when writers reach the publishing stage.

Stories still come to me, and so still I write them. And love it. I just wish all the harassment and bleurgh of life would stop so I could get on with the job I love.

What makes it all worth it? Good reviews! Knowing there is someone out there who enjoyed all my effort lights up my soul. I write for them. To bring someone else a little joy in this ever darkening landscape.

(fellow indie author, Wendy Hewlett and me)
Why did I write this post? Maybe partially to vent all this frustration. But also so other authors know they’re not alone. This life can be very isolating, and it’s all too easy to feel we’re failing, and the only one experiencing obstacles. But we’re never alone. I've seen the worried posts - I've seen you and heard you.

Also, I really wanted readers to appreciate all the challenges we writers face.

We don’t expect everyone to love everything we write. You’re never going to be able to please all of the people all of the time, and all that. Your opinion is valid. But please, don’t be spiteful in reviews. I’ve seen far too many authors crumble from hurtful words. All I ask is for a little compassion, a fair and balanced view of your reading experience.

Authors need support. Yes, don’t we all? I know. But it truly is important. Now more than ever. If you did enjoy a book, please do leave a review and/or share it with your friends and social media. After all, what is a writer without a reader?

If we get more readers, we can afford to write more books – it’s that simple.

(yes, me with Sophie Kinsella; name drop!)

Anyway, thank you for listening. I hope this post has shone a light on some things. And you don’t think I’m just being a moaning Minnie. I just wanted to be honest.

I want to leave on a more positive note. So, I’ll say thank you to all my lovely readers who do leave reviews and/or share my bookish news – I truly appreciate you.

Always in love and light,

TL

REVIEW - NOT ALL HIMBOS WEAR CAPES - pow; epic enemies to lovers!

Not All Himbos Wear Capes by C Rochelle

Date read: 21st June 2023

My rating: 5*
Genre I reckon: m/m daddy super heroes vs villains

Buy link: Amazon

OMG this book - wow, pow, zap, kapow!
I am totally blown away. My inner geek is satisfied.

It is super cute - cue Captain Masculine with his non-swears e.g. Sugar Honey Iced Tea. Plus, as he's such a good boy, he's also a virgin.
But with great power comes the great need to offload all of the control onto a Daddy, apparently.
“Sucky. I sharply inhaled, realizing I’d just thought a word that was dangerously close to…a swear. I’M PRACTICALLY A VILLAIN!”

It is super hot - cue the villain who's there for the domineering.
Oh, those steam scenes are HOT! And yet tender.
"There was so much feral hope in his expression that I wanted to wrap him up in a fluffy blanket and pet him until he purred. Jesus, maybe I was adopted."

Alter egos are firmly in place so as not to alert the normies. However, this means the two MCs are completely unaware they are dating the enemy as they hook up via a dating app. Talk about enemies to lovers!

And it reads like a comic book, albeit one with the steam turned all the way up. Like a super slutty gay Superman.

All of this along with the snark makes it super funny too.

And there's even a fab plot.
Superb world-building and characters who leave you questioning the ultimate question of good vs evil.

You seriously need to read this one. I'm super happy there's already a book 2.

Always in love and light,
TL

REVIEW - THE RINGMASTER - All the fun of the faery fair!

The Ringmaster by Kota Quinn

Date read: 25th May2023

My rating: 5*
Genre I reckon: m/m circus shenanigans

Buy link: Amazon

Oh my! I was waiting the whole series to find out about Seven, and I was highly satisfied! Discovering Peanut's story was just as enthralling, to be fair. A spot of shibari added in? Yes, please.

I absolutely devoured this book.

I LOVE how this series feels like it's written by one author, even though each book is by a different person. The characters appear in one another's stories, and the writing voice is similar enough not to be jarring. All are fairly low angst and high steam with muchly cuteness (& gorgeousness).

I'm so ready for more. Please tell me there will be more!! There will be more, right?

(and I didn't even crack one joke about him being the master of a certain someone's ring! ;-) )

BOOK NEWS - LOVE BITES MORE

Somehow, I resisted the demands of my readers for more Love Bites books for six years! I can only apologise.

But, it gives me tremendous pleasure to announce that there is finally a stand-alone follow-up to The Darkness and Light Duology. And unlike its predecessor which was m/f, this one is m/m/m!

You may remember Elan and Arwyn from Love Bites and Love Bites Harder; they are Pryderi's best friends. Only, now he's happily mated, those two are left with an imbalance. An unsettling distance wedges itself between the three.

Elan and Arwyn had sworn an oath as younglings never to get together in the Den of Sin, because reasons! Basically, they don't want to destroy everything.

But then an exotic male enters their clan with secrets of his own. And things get even rockier still.

Could an all male triad be on the tarot cards in this fantasy tale of love and adventure?

Read Love Bites More to find out!

Also, if you are one of the first 50 readers to pre-order Love Bites More, you can claim your free gift here! I've had chibi stickers specially designed and created bookmarks. But once they're gone they're gone, so get in there quick!

On pre-order now.

Launch date: 20th July 2023

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. Readers are the true magick for authors.

REVIEW - Gobbelino London & a Complication of Unicorns - Furtastic!

Gobbelino London and a Complication of Unicorns by Kim M Watt

Date read: 25th May2023

My rating: 5*
Genre I reckon: paranormal kitty detective

Buy link: Amazon

You can often tell my mood by the types of books I read. Kim Watt always offers fantastical escapism. Just what I needed.

In this book, we get a rare glimpse into the history of Callum, Gobbelino's human PI assistant. And it rakes up all sorts of mischief, as one has come to expect. (Gobbelino being a magnificently snarky cat, of course.)

There is even more danger lurking in this one. It turns out, unicorns are really quite psychopathically cantankerous. I mean - how hard should they even try to look for the missing herd? And trolls can be new-aged. Who knew?

Such fun!!

Although, I may avoid bookshops for a while. And do watch out for the donkey; may cause an existential crisis ;)

If you're looking for a whacky detective with a plethora of paranormal activity, this is the book for you.

Always in love and light,

TL

REVIEW - THE DAREDEVIL - grrrreat!

The Daredevil by Duckie Mack

Date read: 13th May2023

My rating: 5*
Genre I reckon: m/m Squee Romance

Buy link: Amazon

It's no secret that Duckie Mack is one of my one-click authors.

The timing of this book was perfect. During a stressful week, I needed its escapism.

Adorkable characters - check. Sizzling steam - check. Low angst - check.

Everything I've come to expect in this author's books.

This one features a shy boy with anxiety. And, as the title suggests, a guy who seems fearless. And together, they create magick. Squee!

Oh, marshmallow!

A touch of paranormal. Escapism. And endearing romance.

Always in love and light,

REVIEW - IMMORTAL MATCHMAKERS - Insanely good

Immortal Matchmakers Inc Series by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

Date read: 8th May2023

My rating: 5*
Genre I reckon: Humorous godly romance

Buy link: Amazon

Reaching the end of a series is such sweet sorrow! But it is better to have loved and finished than to never have read at all.

This was a fitting, chaotic end to the series. And answered a lot of questions. Yet, asked a couple which allows for more godly mayhem should the author choose. Indeed, there is a spin-off book already.

Finally, Mr Zac gets a proper pursuit. Of course, there's a whirlwind of a plot with Minky and Cimil "helping".

I LOVED this series. Yes, some books were better than others. But every one had me smiling, giggling and grr-arghing.

Whenever the world gets a bit much, I pick up an MJP book and a) realise it could be a whole lot worse and b) get cheered by the absurdity and humour contained within the pages.

I thoroughly recommend this entire series (including the Accidentally Yours forerunners).

Always in love and light,
